Judge Harschly sees Luther in the Courthouse hallway. It’s crowded and buzzing because it’s the sentencing phase of a bank robbery trial.

“Say, Luther.”

“Yes, Judge Harschly?”

“How are you getting on?”

“Day by day, Judge. We’re taking it day by day.”

“Terrible thing, a fire like that. Listen, yesterday I went with Elizabeth, the director of Queechy’s Habitat for Humanity, to look at a house on Old Post Road that was just vacated. Call her and she’ll take you down there to see whether it checks out with you. You’re now at the front of the line for it if the paperwork doesn’t kill you first. Stop in my office and Vera will give you her number.”

“I can’t thank you enough, Judge.”

“That’s what Habitat is there for. You let me know if you need anything else. Doozy!”

“Hello, Judge. Luther.”

“How do, Doozy. Thank you again, Judge,” Luther says as he walks down the hallway.

“Judge, talk with you about something?” Doozy asks.

“This is a first. Must be important. Come on, Doozy, let’s go sit in my chambers.”
